Long Service Award 20th February 2015
Friday marked a very special occasion for the team, Richard “Leggy” Legg’s official award ceremony for twenty years’ continuous service with the Wyke Coastguard Response Team. This makes Richard the third longest serving member of the current team, just behind the SO and DSO. Richards official joining date was the 1st September 1994, a mere 7477 days ago! Throughout the 20 years’ service Richard has been a constant source of support for the team, diligently serving the public as a volunteer on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. Richard has been involved in numerous high profile search and rescue incidents over the years and been awarded a number of Chief Coastguard Commendations for meritorious service.
At the award ceremony we were delighted to be joined by team members past and present, members of Portland Bill CRT, Weymouth Lifeboat crew members, full time Coastguards and senior officers, previous watch officers and staff from Portland MRCC, and of course many family and friends. Also receiving valedictory certificates at the ceremony were previous team member Tony Adams for his 14 years voluntary service before retirement, Sarah Callaby-Brown - serving Watch Officer at MRCC Swansea (Previously at Portland MRCC) and Malcolm Wright for his momentous 40 years voluntary service. A special thanks must also go to Nicola Lizzie Taylor for supplying such an amazing cake for the occasion.
We were trying to think of a suitable timeline marker for the date so that the followers of the Wyke CRT could associate the time since joining. Well, way back on the 1st September 1994 the official number 1 in the UK was “Saturday Night” by Whigfield. It's great to see that Richard, unlike the song, has stood up well to the tests of time!
